Poverty Experience and Human Rights

Working in partnership with Alternatives North, Canada Without Poverty (CWP) is staging consultations, meetings and workshops in Yellowknife and Behchokǫ May 5 to 9 to learn about Northern experiences of poverty, and talk about poverty as a violation of human rights.

The events include public meetings with persons living in poverty, workshops investigating the realities of poverty in the NWT and meetings with territorial MLAs and GNWT officials.  The workshops will be an opportunity to discuss international human rights, the realities of poverty in Canada – especially the unique experiences of Northern poverty – and the upcoming Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Michele Biss, human rights lawyer and the Legal Education and Outreach Coordinator, is representing CWP in the meetings.

The attached backgrounder and Michele Biss biography and event poster provide information on the visit and events.
